Apollo Bay Fisherman’s Co-op
The Apollo Bay Fishermen’s Co-Op was started at the harbour over seventy years ago when local fishermen banded together to find markets for produce from the Bass Strait: abalone, scallops, snapper, flake (or gummy shark) and our world-famous Southern Rock Lobster (crayfish).
Boats today still bring their catch to us here at the last working fishing harbour on the Great Ocean Road. Fisherman Nick Polgeest, who knows a thing or two about lobster, claims our crays are the best in the world and we supply Australia’s finest restaurants as well as top-end hotels across Asia. But the best place to eat our fresh fish and cray is outside by the harbour in the wind, sun and salty air, overlooking beautiful Apollo Bay.
Drop by and see the latest fresh catch, try some fresh local fish straight from the source, including a range of species filleted on site. Get a look at our world-class Southern Rock lobsters being offloaded from the boats before indulging in some of our world-class seafood. It doesn’t get any fresher.
The Local Catch Club
The Co-op has purchased a small, 40-year-old fishing boat, the Tambo Bay, so we can provide the freshest possible local fish directly to you, our valued customers. The fish from the Tambo Bay are all caught, every few days, in local waters off the western Victorian coastline, and come straight from the boat into the Co-op.
Sign up to the Local Catch Club and be the first to hear updates via email about what comes off the boat, so you have access to the freshest fish available. We are focussing on whole fish such as flathead, flounder, and snapper, and there will also be some of the wonderful lesser-known species such as sand whiting, red mullet and boarfish. As a member of the Local Catch Club, you will have access to preparation and cooking suggestions for some of these ‘lesser loved’ species which we believe are some of the most delicious the ocean has to offer!
As a Local Catch Club member, you will also have first access to some spectacular specials when we have a bounty to offer!
