Why buy
Victorian Seafood?
see the places. meet the people. taste the difference.
The bountiful waters off Victorian shores have fed people living around the coast for tens of thousands of years. A fishing industry sprung up on our shores shortly after settlement, catching fish using traditional methods to feed the fledgling colony. Almost 200 years later that industry continues to feed local people, bringing in fish and seafood from just offshore to miles out to sea under the watchful eyes of State and Federal government authorities and working to strict quotas and guidelines. There are also inland fishers working the lakes and rivers catching eel while a growing aquaculture sector sees shellfish grown in sheltered waters off the coast and freshwater fish and crustaceans raised in ponds and dams inland.
And they all come together at
The Melbourne Seafood Centre.
THE HEART AND SOUL OF VICTORIAN SEAFOOD
Our Waters
A commitment to
ecological sustainability.
The Victorian fishing industry is committed to ecological sustainability, and the sharing of marine resources amongst all stakeholders. This not only protects the ecosystems fishers rely on, but also ensures that professional fishers can continue to supply fresh, high-quality Victorian seafood to Victorian consumers in the long term.
Seafood Industry Victoria believes that the best way to ensure a sustainable future for the marine environment, fisheries resources and Victoria's professional fishers, is to use the best available science and use collaborative and equitable processes to manage fisheries.
Simply put, there are enough fish for everyone when evidence-based and science-based fisheries management decisions are made, and Seafood Industry Victoria plays an important role in the process.
